Air Canada charter flight: St. John’s to Charlottetown (Business class)

20 11 2011

I was on tour with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in the Atlantic provinces of Canada (Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick).

Most of the tour we travelled on buses, and on the way to St. John’s I flew commercial.

However, Air Canada was a sponsor of the tour, and this flight was a special charter for the orchestra.

It was operated by an Embraer 190, which means that the aircraft has two cabins (in the Air Canada configuration). A lottery took place for the nine business class seats, and I was one of the lucky winners!

Farewell, AC paper upgrades (YYC-YUL-YYC on AC in J)

28 07 2011

This is a trip report to say farewell to Air Canada’s paper upgrade certificates. There were a few types: System-Wide Upgrade (SWU), usable on high fare classes, blue;  Special System-Wide Upgrade (SSWU), usable on nearly all fare classes, red; North America Upgrade (NAU), usable on high fare classes within North America, green.

For some (including me), this system worked great. I would buy flight passes for use within North America and could then “burn” the SWUs and NAUs. So when Air Canada announced that it was changing to eUpgrade credits, I was sad to see the certificates go, and worried that the number of upgrades in a year would go down. While in total, the number of upgrades did sadly go down, luckily, I now receive many more upgrades internationally, which is truly where they matter.

Poor planning on my part also meant that I had quite a few extra paper upgrades at the end of the year, so I would use the red ones on short 2 hour flights, previously unthinkable. However, the good thing about that is I had some left as “wallpaper” at the end of the status year.

Gone are the days of hoping that the gate agent will forget to take in your certificate. Gone are the days of forgetting your certificate and losing the upgrade. I will miss you!

Part 2: YQB-YUL on Air Canada Jazz Dash 8-100, Quebec City VIP lounge

28 07 2011

Part 1: YYZ-YQB on the new Jazz dba Air Canada Express Dash 8-Q400
Part 2: YQB-YUL on Air Canada Jazz Dash 8-100, Quebec City VIP lounge

The people driving me to the airport had never been to YQB before! So of course, there was a little confusion driving up. They went and did a turn a little too soon. Oh well, we were extremely early anyways.

Part 1: YYZ-YQB on the new Jazz dba Air Canada Express Dash 8-Q400

28 07 2011

Part 1: YYZ-YQB on the new Jazz dba Air Canada Express Dash 8-Q400
Part 2: YQB-YUL on Air Canada Jazz Dash 8-100, Quebec City VIP lounge

In June, I was going to Piopolis, Quebec. To get there, I could fly to Montreal direct, and then drive 3h45 to Piopolis; or I could fly to Quebec through Montreal or Toronto, and drive 2h50 to Piopolis. Since this was summer and the construction works on the bridges in Montreal were fully underway (plus this was a holiday weekend in Quebec) I decided to fly to Quebec. What sealed the deal was the fact that Air Canada Jazz had just started flying their new Dash 8-Q400 turboprops to YQB. And in addition, it would be the first time that I would see the (supposedly) great lounge in YQB.

Edmonton-Calgary on Air Canada, Edmonton Maple Leaf Lounge

2 06 2011

The main reasons for writing this trip report are to cover the Maple Leaf Lounge in Edmonton. Also, there is only one flight in the day that’s an Embraer E190 between YEG-YYC and vice versa, so in a sense being on this flight is ‘special’.

YEG isn’t liked very much due mainly to it’s location. It’s at least a 45 minute drive from Edmonton, and that’s in perfect traffic and weather conditions. Anything goes wrong – it could easily be over an hour. Many people prefer to already drive down to YYC, which is 3 hours farther, to enjoy the larger connectivity options and (sometimes) lower fares.

Not many people, therefore, fly on this route as a simple segment. Usually it’s mostly connecting traffic (connecting through Calgary, that is).

v. Transehe Design – the Fountain Pen that never leaks

24 05 2011

…And that I can’t identify. Sorry. Edit: it’s a v. Transehe Design pen. Can be found here.

Yes, I should probably be working away on one of my numerous backlogged Trip Reports, but I needed to take a breather and do something different.

I am also using this as an opportunity to try and identify this pen, so if anybody has a clue what it is, please let me know!

This fountain pen was given to me as a gift from a friend I don’t see very often. But it’s such a fantastic pen.

Build:

Extremely solid, from some strong metal, coated in black. Everything is metal, so it’s perfect to put in your pocket without worrying about sitting on it and causing cracks or other problems. The cap screws into the barrel, using the same thread both ways (ie. when posted and when closed).

Nib:

Quite large actually, I was surprised when I got my Montblanc Chopin and the nib was so small (I thought). Writes like a charm, never any skipping or hard starts.

The nib is the only thing I have been able to research whatsoever. The nib is marked Schmidt Iridium Point. It’s an M (and just that). I discovered that the nib is gold-plated, but the most intriguing and interesting thing to me is that the feed and the nib were tested in collaboration with Lufthansa. Awesome! And that brings me to the next point…

Leakage:

Now this is the amazing part. This pen, when with Private Reserve ink cartridge, never leaks. I have it in my back pocket at all times, and it has never leaked.

Once it did leak, because I had put in a Diplomat black ink cartridge, and whenever I’d unscrew the cap, I’d have to clean the barrel. I returned to Private Reserve ink and haven’t had a problem since.

Design:

Love it! Looks inconspicuous, matches with all clothes, from shorts to tuxedos. Looks a little like a cigar (I’ve been asked if it is a cigar!?).

Convenience:

I’m still in the age that I wear nice clothes but not suits (for everyday purposes, at least). Therefore I wear jeans every day for most of the year (it’s cold in Calgary). And this pen is always in my back pocket. It’s one of those things like a cell phone in a pocket – if I don’t have it there, it bugs me. I love being able to sign restaurant bills, hotel bills, and fill in customs forms with a fountain pen wherever I am.

So that’s it! My first attempt at a fountain pen review…

Montreal-Toronto City Centre Airport on Air Canada Express

17 05 2011

I had to fly Montreal to Toronto and had a great chance to try the brand-new Air Canada Express service to YTZ, Toronto City Centre airport. I flew it on May 6th, it launched on May 1st.

I hadn’t had the chance to fly to YTZ because Porter isn’t part of Star Alliance, to which I’m firmly stuck to.
