Part 5: FRA-YYC on AC in J (lie-flat)

25 06 2010

Part 1: Introduction
Part 2: YYC-FRA-WAW on LH in Y, train to Toruń
Part 3: My stay in Toruń, including the Hotel Bulwar
Part 4: GDN-FRA on LO in Y
Part 5: FRA-YYC on AC in J

Now comes the part when I explain what Air Canada Special System-Wide Upgrades (SSWUs) are. As an AC top tier status member, Elite or Super Elite, you get a few of these “red” certificates. Unfortunately they are paper, and you confirm 4 days (Elite) or 7 days (Super Elite) before the flight. I said in the first part that booking through the LH.com website was a mistake, and now, finally, I can explain why. If you book through Lufthansa or any other source than AC, for that matter, you can only request an upgrade at check-in. In this case, that worked out fine, but sometimes it doesn’t.

Nothing exciting, got to the airport with time to spare, checked-in, and proceeded through security.

Part 2: YYC-FRA-WAW on LH in Y, train to Toruń

23 06 2010

Part 1: Introduction
Part 2: YYC-FRA-WAW on LH in Y, train to Toruń
Part 3: My stay in Toruń, including the Hotel Bulwar
Part 4: GDN-FRA on LO in Y
Part 5: FRA-YYC on AC in J

Having just finished doing some last-minute things, I jumped into a cab and made it to the airport about an hour before the flight. No bags to check on the way there, so everything is good. Line up to security was horrendous, but that is what happens when you have tons of people who fly at most once a year – that’s because LH, along with BA and KLM, fly out of the D gates, which is the stronghold and hub of WestJet, Canada’s primary cheap airline. Security itself was painless, definitely the best screening experience of the whole trip.
