Farewell, AC paper upgrades (YYC-YUL-YYC on AC in J)

28 07 2011

This is a trip report to say farewell to Air Canada’s paper upgrade certificates. There were a few types: System-Wide Upgrade (SWU), usable on high fare classes, blue;  Special System-Wide Upgrade (SSWU), usable on nearly all fare classes, red; North America Upgrade (NAU), usable on high fare classes within North America, green.

For some (including me), this system worked great. I would buy flight passes for use within North America and could then “burn” the SWUs and NAUs. So when Air Canada announced that it was changing to eUpgrade credits, I was sad to see the certificates go, and worried that the number of upgrades in a year would go down. While in total, the number of upgrades did sadly go down, luckily, I now receive many more upgrades internationally, which is truly where they matter.

Poor planning on my part also meant that I had quite a few extra paper upgrades at the end of the year, so I would use the red ones on short 2 hour flights, previously unthinkable. However, the good thing about that is I had some left as “wallpaper” at the end of the status year.

Gone are the days of hoping that the gate agent will forget to take in your certificate. Gone are the days of forgetting your certificate and losing the upgrade. I will miss you!

Part 2: YQB-YUL on Air Canada Jazz Dash 8-100, Quebec City VIP lounge

The people driving me to the airport had never been to YQB before! So of course, there was a little confusion driving up. They went and did a turn a little too soon. Oh well, we were extremely early anyways.

Montreal-Toronto City Centre Airport on Air Canada Express

17 05 2011

I had to fly Montreal to Toronto and had a great chance to try the brand-new Air Canada Express service to YTZ, Toronto City Centre airport. I flew it on May 6th, it launched on May 1st.

I hadn’t had the chance to fly to YTZ because Porter isn’t part of Star Alliance, to which I’m firmly stuck to.

Part 4: YXU-YYZ-YUL on AC in Y
Part 5: My stay in Montreal
Part 6: YUL-YYZ-YYC on AC in Y

Another day, another trip. This time to both London Ontario and Montreal. As outlined in my previous YXU trip report, there are a few options, but I like the direct AC flight to get there. Then to get to Montreal a connection in YYZ was necessary. Returning, I stopped in YYZ for a half-day, so I once again had a ‘connection’ in YYZ. My final routing was YYC-YXU-YYZ-YUL-YYZ-YYC.
